Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero is facing possible disqualification from the Sorsogon gubernatorial race for allegedly violating election regulations. Cause-oriented group Bayan at Mamamayan (BM) on Friday filed with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) a petition seeking the disqualification not only of Escudero, but also of his partymates Mayor Manuel Fortes, Rep. Evelina Escudero and congressional aspirant Ditas Ramos of the Nationalist People Coalition (NPC). The group accused Escudero and his companions of donating P50,000 to the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Seminary (OLPS) as payment for the use of the church’s premises in a proclamation rally.

The 5th division of the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan on Thursday, December 22, acquitted Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito and 5 co-accused of graft charges over the supposed misuse of San Juan City calamity funds when the senator was its mayor. Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Roland Jurado, in a 45-page resolution, granted a demurrer to evidence because the prosecution’s evidence failed to overcome the presumption of innocence.

While conceding that the FDA possesses such power, the mayor claims he may nevertheless, in the exercise of his own power, prevent the operation of drug stores previously permitted by the former. The Supreme Court declared that the challenged Orders are MODIFIED in the sense that the suspension of Mayor's Permit No. 1955 shall be considered valid but drug stores return to their original sites as specified in the FDA licenses and the mayor's permits or until the request for transfer, if made by the private respondents/owners, is approved by the petitioner/Mayor Gordon.

The Sandiganbayan has junked graft cases against now Department of Information and Communication Technology Secretary Gregorio Honasan and his co-accused in relation to the alleged misuse of his Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) when he was still senator in 2012. In its 52-page ruling, the anti-graft court’s 2nd Division granted the demurrer to evidence filed by Honasan, Michael Benjamin, Mehol Kiram Sadain, Fedelina Aldanese, Olga Sajise Galido, Giovanni Manuel Gaerlan, Galay Makalinggan, and Aurora Aragon-Mabang. The court said, “the evidence of the prosecution failed to sufficiently establish the essential elements of the crime charged and to overcome the presumption of innocence in favor of the accused.”

On Tuesday evening, 119 members of the House of Representatives voted to give the constitutional Commission on Human Rights a measly budget of only P1,000. 1SAGIP party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta, a member of the House supermajority, forwarded the motion to slash the budget of the CHR. Only 32 lawmakers voted against his motion.

"Na-politicize ako, ginawan lang ako, pinaimbestigahan na yung tao, walang nagsasabi na may ganitong pangalan, from different municipality wala din. Parang political distraction lang yun," she told radio DZMM's senatorial candidates' interview "Ikaw Na Ba." (I was politicized, it was made up, the person was investigated but no one said that there was a name like this, even from a different municipality. It was just like a political distraction.)

A Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) found former senator Antonio Trillanes IV guilty of libel for accusing former Makati mayor Junjun Binay in 2015 of buying off Court of Appeals (CA) justices to obtain favorable orders. Makati RTC Branch 148 Judge Andres Soriano fined Trillanes P100,000 and ordered the former senator to pay Binay P500,000 in moral damages and costs of suit. There was no jailtime imposed.

Aquilino Pimentel calls for Zubiri’s resignation
