"If we are too dependent on imports, even our own vegetables, our own agricultural products, we will not be able to control those — or we will not have much control over the price of commodities. So, what’s happening, ‘inflation is rising" Lacson said in Tagalog at a 2021 press conference.
The Lacson, along with his running mate Sotto, has already put forward a plan to buy 50 percent of the agricultural products of local farmers and fishermen, put up model food outlets in Metro Manila, especially in Quezon City, and strengthen the capacity of MSMEs.
Their plans help consumers buy fresh vegetables, fish, and meat straight from local producers and undercut the excessive importation and smuggling of food commodities that are the root of corruption, they added.
Lacson says he will continue to support infrastructure programs but will be very strict about budgeting to avoid instances of overspending and corruption.
Lacson, along with Grace Poe on Thursday lauded the “timely response” of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to allow the continued distribution of fuel subsidies to the public transport sector. He said “This is a great deal for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators, as well as farmers and fisherfolk who are dealing with the continued rise in prices of oil.”
Though he has no recent comments on the matter, but has previously called on telcos to improve their services to the public.
Lacson says he is for mining but only if mining is "responsible" and "data-driven and science-based."
Lacson aims for the Philippines to be a "model country" in climate change efforts; wants to transition to renewable sources of energy.
Lacoson says that the project could have been a success if experts were properly consulted prior to its implementation.
Lacson voted "yes" on his stand on divorce. He pointed out that some Filipinos, especially those in troubled marriages, were pushing for a divorce law to ease the process and broaden the grounds for the official separation of spouses unlike the more tedious annulment and nullification of marriage procedures.
On same-sex marriage, Lacson said yes to a civil union. However, if same-sex marriage before the churc, no."
Lacson says that he cannot give an answer as "further studies" are needed, but maintains that abortion should not be an option. He added that government should support both mother and child.
Lacson upports and encourages a review of the current minimum wage and dialogue with workers. He pointed out the need to balance the call of our workers for a higher wage, and the capacity of employers to pay these higher salaries.
“We must accelerate the transition, and our Philippine Overseas Labor Offices must be proactive in being migrant worker offices, as they will compose these. We must accelerate the implementation of the law so we can help OFWs,” said Lacson, stressing also the importance of the Department of Migrant Workers.
Maintaining a neutral position in the conflict would make it awkward for the Philippines to ask for help when we need it, according to Lacson. He states, "I was thinking, what if we were invaded by China, and we needed help from the rest of the word?"
“More often than not, we only think of national security when we hear of China’s encroachment into our territorial waters. It’s actually much more than that … It has a great effect not only on our national security because that much is obvious—but our food security and our economic security are greatly affected,” Lacson said about the issue on the West Philippine Sea.
In terms of the drug war, Lacson says he will focus on "the bigger picture". There will be no extrajudicial killings and his administration will rejoin International Criminal Court (ICC) for proper investigation.
Lacson pointed out lapses in the pandemic response and aims to implement more health-based regulations and vaccine distribution; assign proper officials to manage crisis instead of armed forces.
“We need to pass an enabling law as regards the issue of political dynasty. Our Constitution [which bans political dynasties] has been in effect for a long time. Since 1987, no Congress has passed a law that would comply with the constitutional provision. It’s about time,” Lacson stated
